UX/UI “New” Shuffle feature Design

My Role: UX/UI Design & Research

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Background: Pinterest is adding a “Shuffle” feature that allows users to shuffle the pins in their Boards .

  • The objective of adding a shuffle feature to Pinterest's app and website is to enhance user inspiration and creativity by providing a randomized display of saved pins within specific boards, sparking fresh ideas and engagement with the platform.

  • Pinterest's decision to introduce a shuffle feature aligns with the company's efforts to support the creator economy and cater to users' evolving needs for creative expression and inspiration. By incorporating the shuffle option, Pinterest aims to offer a new way for users to engage with their saved content, particularly within boards dedicated to specific themes, such as outfit inspirations, home decor ideas, and more.

The objective of this feature is to encourage users to continuously seek and discover new ideas without the need for manual organization or curation of their boards. With the shuffle option, Pinterest acknowledges the value of serendipity and the power of unexpected connections, inspiring users in different ways as they stumble upon pins they might have overlooked otherwise.

  • The shuffle feature will solve the problem of users seeking fresh and inspiring ideas from their saved pins without the need for manual organization, allowing them to discover new combinations of images and spark creativity and self-expression within their collages and digital art on the Pinterest platform.

RESEARCH

Goal: Research Pinterest User demographic to understand the specific needs and preferences of Pinterest users, especially in terms of inspiration and content discovery.

Research Methods :

For this project, I utilized several research methods. These included conducting secondary research on the Pinterest user demographic, administering a public online survey targeted at Pinterest users, and conducting in-depth interviews with 5 Pinterest users. These methods allowed me to gather valuable insights on their experience using the platform.

Remote Online Survey:

To study what Pinterest users like, I did a survey with 11 questions. Luckily, 54 people who use Pinterest actively took part and shared their thoughts. This helped me learn what they prefer on the platform.

“Pinterest has helped with my writing and with finding my personal aesthetic. I like that I can find pictures/pins that mimic or have the same vibe as my current pin collections. It. makes it super easy to build large Pinterest boards to have a large selection of inspiration to look through.”

“The Pinterest board I revisit the most is my ‘Fit Inspo’ board, but it has over 400 pins in it so the shuffle feature would honestly help look through my pins until I get inspired in a more convenient way.”

I sketched out two different options on where the shuffle button feature could be located on users Pinterest boards.

I leaned toward choosing placement #1 because it makes the new feature easy to find and use. Placing it right next to the existing main functions, "More ideas" and "Organize," makes logical sense. This is effective as it consolidates the primary actions on a Pinterest board, with the shuffle button being an additional key function.

Shuffle Button Prototype

I opted to position the new shuffle button between the "More Ideas” and “Organize” buttons. This choice seemed logical to me because the shuffle button serves a dual purpose—it provides users with “More Ideas” and offers a simple way to effortlessly reorganize their Pinterest boards.

Now, all three buttons are arranged in the order of the most frequently used main function (The Main Ideas Button) to the least used function (Organize Button). The objective is for the shuffle button to become a highly utilized function as well. The usability ranking of the three buttons was determined by the user interviews and surveys I conducted.
